Nine Seventy Three

Nine Seventy Three

Acrylic collage

This collage painting is one of my Engine Series. It is the Appanoose County Red engine, circa 1952. It has been recently repainted a bright red with white stripes.

I worked from my photographs, and designed a vertical format which accentuates the dynamic bulk of the engine. Some of the foreground papers have oil pastel included with the acrylic pigments. This adds more texture, in addition to the heavy body acrylics I typically use. The support is an Ampersand hardboard panel.

I enjoyed adding all the bits and pieces of details to the engine: stripes, ladders, lights, and shadows. Also used was parts of an Iowa road map.
