There’s quite a large number of churches in our small community, and I was told this church is still going strong even though there’s a very small number attending. It started out as mostly a Swedish membership . It is located in what they call “Swedetown” on the south side of Centerville off the levee. I worked from a photograph taken around 1996. It still looks pretty much the same.

This small watercolor was painted using one of my older photos, so I don’t know if this is still an actual place or has moved. What attracted me to paint this design was the largeness of the tower with the big sand piles in front of it, dwarfing a solitary figure — which I didn’t have space to add. Next time! I also added the oil tank on stilts and a stop sign. Sometimes when I take a photo some of the details are not obvious until I start painting; they add a surprise and extra interest. This is located in Mystic, Iowa, in Appanoose County.

All their characteristics are paintable! However, I paint from my photo instead of painting en plein aire! I like the comfort of my studio and climate control.

This painting includes rough bark, gnarly, twisted branches and shadow shapes in the strong morning sunlight. The more I look, other bright colors are evident. We have many different trees on our property and have viewed these cottonwoods in all seasons. I’m always looking for interesting trees with a lot of character when driving, and I often stop to get a photo to work from later.

This is a partial view of the west side of the Albia square storefronts. Having lived in Centerville for a number of years, I’ve been interested in small towns and their changing businesses and old buildings. We drive through this quaint town numerous times and I snapped a few pictures for reference.

What caught my eye were the shapes and red and green colors. Usually the signage attracts my interest too, and while painting it I noticed the name ”Love Block” at the top of one of the buildings. Many times there is a date on top from when they built it, or a name. As times are changing, with the move away from rural towns, I chose to document these buildings and remember that life once revolved around them.

I was told it was no longer doing business, but someone down the street was selling pizza now. This watercolor was completed at the Davis County “Plein Air” event on the square in Bloomfield. In the early morning the temperature was 70 degrees and low humidity. It later climbed to 91 degrees. I felt it was a very successful painting, as I was worried about the paper not drying in the humidity.

The challenge was to paint this engine in a smaller format, which is very different from my usual work on a large 22 x 30 sheet of paper. It still makes for a great design, with less nitpicking details. It brings back memories when I was very small, Dad used to take me to the nearest railroad tracks and sit and watch the trains go by. The engineer would always toot the horn and we’d wave.

I’m attracted to architectural structures and have never painted it from this angle (from State Street, looking at it from a northeast direction). The oblong sign on the corner, the lacy ironwork of the balcony, the striped awnings, rustic bricks, the old-style lampposts are part of our historic district. Old Glory adds a special burst of color in the shady side of the hotel.

This design started horizontal, but I decided to change the format and the initial sketch. I thought it would be more dramatic as a vertical composition.

I took the photo of this old dairy barn many years ago on a trip to the historic barn in Cantril, Iowa. On the way home, the sky turned black and I pulled over to the shoulder of the road to take some photos of this barn. Most of the roof had fallen in, and the tin shingles were rattling and blowing in the wind. I took the pics just in time — after I jumped back into the car it began raining heavily. The storm gave me the idea to do a tornado. I’m not sure if the barn is still standing — I haven’t traveled in that direction since my first trip.

This structure has intrigued me because of the shapes and the gnarled tree. I have painted it a number of times and found the sun and shadow patterns interesting. The bright white fence contributed to its character and the textured field beyond. It also has numerous small window opening, probably to dry the hay stored inside. It is still standing on the main highway leading into the small town of Exline. I’m making an attempt to document these midwest structures, as they are disappearing from our landscape.

I am still interested in these old barn structures — their shapes and details fascinate me. And they are fast disappearing from the landscape. I feel they best describe Iowa because agriculture is the top priority here. This barn is located in Mahaska County, Iowa.

Then manner in which I approach painting them is different from most artists. By painting my papers first with heavy body acrylics and then cutting them into collage shapes, I achieve a descriptive, textured painting in bold, bright colors. I feel these textures capture the identity of the structures and give them character, as do the saturated colors. In this design, I focused on the windmill and its shadow.

My inspiration for this piece came from traveling through the Iowa countryside the summer of 1995. I wanted to document local barns because I realized they are rapidly disappearing from the landscape and are interesting structures with lots of character.

This particular barn is located near Seymour, Iowa. I’m not sure if it’s still there. What drew me to this barn was the leaning cupola on top and the strong shadow patterns. I wanted to capture the texture of the weathered boards.

I was also interested in presenting the design in a square format, instead of the typical horizontal composition; it adds strength to the barn structure, enhancing the angles and shapes. I added the sheep because farm animals are important to Iowa life — these add bright color and whimsy to the design.

I decided to photograph and paint the barn series when I realized they were disappearing from our landscape. I just started driving and meandered down every side road I could, searching out these old, dilapidated structures. This barn captured my interest because of the unusual roof shape; I haven’t found another like it in this area of southeastern Iowa. It is located near the small town of Plano, on the far side of Lake Rathbun.

The length and structure was yet another variety and had a corncrib attached to the far side, which was mostly out of my view and halfway fallen down. I believe this is a barn where they raise cattle, as was depicted on their sign (“Milani ranch”).
