They are well-behaved most of the time, and well-trained too. Bubba, the Boston Terrier, is the most energetic dog I’ve ever seen. He runs around the backyard like a maniac–it is fun to watch him gallop wildly. He makes me laugh! Mickey loves to chase and retrieve his rubber ball. They both happily greet friends and family and sit in your lap. And they love and comfort my sister when she’s not feeling well; they cuddle up to her in bed.

I feel this portrait captures their personalities, markings and their cuteness–all what we love in our pets!

This dog was well-loved by his owner and many people. Unfortunately, he had to be put to sleep because of illness. My sister has two of his puppies, Snoozer and Petey, which will be my next subjects to paint. This particular dog characteristically cocked his head and looked at you, as if he knew what you were thinking.

This is my second still life featuring my hand-sewed Crazy Quilt, and I wonder what I was thinking since it has so many details — the ruby-red vase, apples, an antique mirror, wood-grained table, and transparent glass! A lot a textures crammed into a still life, but I am very happy with the results. It only took me a month to paint; gone are the days when I completed a painting this large in just a few days. There are lots of repeated patterns and vivid hues in this, besides the difficult challenge of drawing every item correctly.

This is a horizontal design with predominant colors of deep red, gold, lime, turquoise, purple, and gray.

The main feature is the flared emerald-green vase and the crazy quilt, which I sewed with many of my fabric scraps. It is a one-of-a-kind quilt! Also in this setup are square mirror tiles, apples, and a round ruby vase. It was most difficult to paint the quilt and the curving pattern of the flared vase. Drawing the design structure first is another love of mine. This piece is a continuation of my interest in still lifes focusing on glassware. I love the transparency of the glass and the relationship of the elements and their colors.

There’s quite a large number of churches in our small community, and I was told this church is still going strong even though there’s a very small number attending. It started out as mostly a Swedish membership . It is located in what they call “Swedetown” on the south side of Centerville off the levee. I worked from a photograph taken around 1996. It still looks pretty much the same.

What attracted me to paint this design was the largeness of the tower with the big sand piles in front of it, dwarfing a solitary figure — which I didn’t have space to add. Next time! I also added the oil tank on stilts and a stop sign. Sometimes when I take a photo some of the details are not obvious until I start painting; they add a surprise and extra interest. This is located in Mystic, Iowa, in Appanoose County.

All their characteristics are paintable! However, I paint from my photo instead of painting en plein aire! I like the comfort of my studio and climate control.

This painting includes rough bark, gnarly, twisted branches and shadow shapes in the strong morning sunlight. The more I look, other bright colors are evident. We have many different trees on our property and have viewed these cottonwoods in all seasons. I’m always looking for interesting trees with a lot of character when driving, and I often stop to get a photo to work from later.

The double shapes of the shadows were neat too. The only thing I didn’t think of when setting it up was how to paint the surface of the table. It was pebbly-textured and, finishing up, I decided on using Seurat’s pointillism. I felt this was very successful and liked the final product.

I believe this is the west side, although sometimes my directions get mixed up.

I like the lemonade color he painted it! I tried to capture all the details that characterize it. This was a fun piece to work on, between my two larger watercolors that are in progress. It feels great to be able to complete a small piece in just a day.

This is a partial view of the west side of the Albia square storefronts. Having lived in Centerville for a number of years, I’ve been interested in small towns and their changing businesses and old buildings. We drive through this quaint town numerous times and I snapped a few pictures for reference.

What caught my eye were the shapes and red and green colors. Usually the signage attracts my interest too, and while painting it I noticed the name ”Love Block” at the top of one of the buildings. Many times there is a date on top from when they built it, or a name. As times are changing, with the move away from rural towns, I chose to document these buildings and remember that life once revolved around them.

This old guy is sitting on an orange rock in the middle of a stream.

For the accent color, I used a bright red in the feathers and the top of his head and stripes on his long legs. He has quite an expression too, like he’s been perched on that rock for hours. I decided to set him against a warm yellow sky for contrast.

My work in collage has been inspired by many artists. Some of these are Matisse, Romare Bearden, Joan Miró, Edward Betts and Gerald Brommer.

The definition of “collage” is a picture built up wholly or partly from pieces of paper, cloth or other materials stuck on canvas or other ground. Collage as a medium emerged in France in 1912 with cubists Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso. These artists designed their pictures with shapes of paper — cut or torn and pasted as integral components of their artwork. They used newspaper headlines for graphic impact and textures. Picasso’s Still Life with Chair Caning in 1912 is often considered the first modern collage. It is actually a construction of many two- and three-dimensional elements. In the same year, Braque incorporated wood-grained wallpaper into a series of charcoal drawings. The French term for collage was papier collé, meaning the art of pasting papers to a support.

Picasso's "Still Life with Chair Caning"

"Fruitdish and Glass", papier collé and charcoal on paper, by Georges Braque

In the 1930s, Matisse used cut paper shapes as a preparatory work for commissioned pieces to be executed in other media. Later he published a portfolio of twenty color plates of his cut-out designs, which were cut with scissors. His shapes were very simple. In the early 1940s, the abstract expressionists, including Romare Bearden, used cut photo images to create powerful social commentary.

Cover of "Jazz", Matisse's book of paper cutouts

"The Calabash", by Romare Bearden

Later, in the 1950s and 1960s, artists such as Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, and Ellsworth Kelly explored collage, leading to assemblages and constructions of experimental works.

Untitled collage, by Robert Rauschenberg

Today, contemporary artists use new materials such as polymer emulsions and acrylic gels, and new technical processes such as photography, printing, and computer-generated images. Collage artists gather and store every kind of paper and other materials for their works. The sky’s the limit, and there are no rules regarding media. It is a dynamic and stimulating process that leads to fascinating artworks with explorations of surface manipulation.

Most of my collages are created by cutting my hand-painted acrylic papers with an X-Acto knife or tearing them. The colors are variegated and saturated with pigmentation. My design is first articulated in a loosely-drawn contour sketch. I have used other materials such as maps, beads, wire, feathers, rice papers and even my old paintings.
