Mini Coneflowers
July 5, 2016
This is another petite painting challenge, in a 6” x 6” format. Square designs are more difficult than the usual rectangular ones, but I prefer them. I began with a detailed drawing of my garden coneflowers from life. Working in my sketchbook daily is on my to-do list. It is good practice and your observation […] more »

This is a pencil portrait commission done for a client. I work from your photograph, as long as it’s sharp and clear. All portrait requests are welcome, any subject matter or age group. Pets are very popular too! more »
Hollyberry Toucan
June 29, 2016
I have been working on a series of Christmas themed animals and birds because I believe there is a need for something humorous and different than what the usual holiday designs offer. I love toucans because of their shape and colorful feathers. I’ve combined the winter holly with the tropical bird in a Christmas hat, […] more »
Bronze Iris
June 27, 2016
This is another sumi-e watercolor that was completed in one sitting. I used my sketch from life done in May. The blossoms on this iris were bronze and coppery tones. It was a joy to paint! The background was finished wet-in-wet with a mix of green, orange and white gouache. more »
April Iris With Antique Jar
June 23, 2016
I have been inspired by my garden flowers — the colors are luscious and bright! This piece was worked from using my original sketch, done from a still life of a Japanese iris. They are much smaller than the bearded variety. I set up the iris in one of my mom’s antique jars that has […] more »
Joyful Music
June 16, 2016
Earlier this year, I wrote down many ideas for subject matter to paint. I intended to do a music series after the guitars and violin. For this piece I used my reference photo taken at the Museum of Making Music in Carlsbad, California. Beginning with a very loose pencil drawing and weaving colors and shapes […] more »
Iowa State Capitol
June 4, 2016
I have decided to rework the background on this collage. I felt the sky shape needed a brighter color and thought that a cool red, pinks and purples would make the greens pop. The sky was pieced together using many strips of these variegated colors. I also decided that the yellow shapes needed some division […] more »
Keokuk, Keosauqua and Clinton
June 2, 2016
I am continuing my bicycle series and loved the challenge of doing a smaller piece. I began with a simple line drawing of a bicycle close-up and started gluing some of the positive shapes. Halfway through gluing, I decided to add another smaller bike above it — a bit of a squeeze, but it adds […] more »
Scenic Route Along the Cedar River
May 31, 2016
I have been doing a series of bicycles for my upcoming show for the Artisan’s Gallery in Des Moines. This is the seventh in the series. While cutting some of the map pieces, I have been noticing places of interest and small towns in the state of Iowa. Especially interesting are the scenic routes. The […] more »
Biking Six
May 26, 2016
Bicycle shapes are wonderful, and I am continually working on this series. The design possibilities are endless. I love the geometric shapes and the challenge of working on this theme. As the others, Iowa maps are used in the background. I used an archival foamboard for the support. Gel medium and a UV Varnish is […] more »
