A&W, circa 1960
The inspiration for this painting was a request for the iconic restaurant in Centerville, Iowa, back in the “old days”. It was a popular place to eat, and people still have fond memories of it. It is no longer on the levee and has been replaced with modern fast food venues. The signage describes it all — “ice cream, popcorn, barbeque, root beer”.
I sketched the design using an old photograph. I was not able to visit and do sketches from life, as is my usual way to begin a watercolor. It is a plain building, but I found the window reflections added interest and movement to the composition. This is part of a series of local scenes that I have painted of Centerville and other small towns. The small businesses have character in the shapes, color and signage. Bring on the memories!
