This watercolor depicts a street scene in Centerville, Iowa. I was inspired by the dark, angled roof shapes of the Presbyterian Church and the surrounding businesses. It is a small piece of the larger scene and very familiar to most people who live there. The intersection is Maple and Main with the Appanoose Historical Museum, which was once the old post office. Abutting the church is the Flower Center, an old staple in town. I find old buildings fascinating to draw and paint. I have done a series of backalley series in Centerville, one which was published in Rockport Publishers’ “The Best of Drawing & Sketching”. I love painting old towns because they are full of character. My Centerville square series are popular because the storefronts of the businesses have changed over the years and people have nostalgic memories of them.
