Numa Road

Numa Road

Watercolor

My inspiration for this painting was an interesting barn along the road, traveling towards the town of Numa, Iowa. I have been interested in these structures after moving to Iowa, and I have completed a series of barn motifs over the years. Many of the barn structures have since disappeared.

Over the years I have taken many photographs for reference, knowing that I would paint them eventually. They are full of character with their interesting geometric shapes and their supportive sheds, silos, hay bales, fences, windows and the surrounding rural landscape. I hope to capture their character. This particular barn looked deserted and lonely in the field and the shadow-shapes added another element of strong values to my composition.
