Casting A Shadow

Casting A Shadow

Acrylic collage

I am still interested in these old barn structures — their shapes and details fascinate me. And they are fast disappearing from the landscape. I feel they best describe Iowa because agriculture is the top priority here. This barn is located in Mahaska County, Iowa.

Then manner in which I approach painting them is different from most artists. By painting my papers first with heavy body acrylics and then cutting them into collage shapes, I achieve a descriptive, textured painting in bold, bright colors. I feel these textures capture the identity of the structures and give them character, as do the saturated colors. In this design, I focused on the windmill and its shadow.
