Mirror Magic
My inspiration and focus for this design is centered on a floral theme and abstracted as a kaleidoscope image. It is similar to a creation I completed many years ago that intrigued me. The repeated shapes and colors of the sunflowers unifies the design.
I made preliminary sketches first and planned the composition using tracing papers, then drew the repeated images on my watercolor paper. I began with the sunflower design in the middle and planned a square format working around to the corners. The curved linear design creates eye movement. Each section of the design was painted in an additive method, only wetting the paper in areas that I was working on. The green of the seeds were mixed on my palette. The shapes were painted loosely and I connected them using a limited palette of yellows and blues. I focused on the repeated abstract shapes and values of the flowers and I feel it works together as a unified piece.
