Old MacDonald’s Farm

Old MacDonald’s Farm

Acrylic collage

I am inspired by the old barn structures in this state of Iowa, which are rapidly diminishing. When I began acrylic collage in 1985, barns were my first subject matter to paint. The square format is one of my favorites. It is a challenge and I think the design possibilities are unique from using a rectangular space.

I have saved a number of collage paper scraps and decided to use these for my smaller compositions. I did use one of my reference photos, very loosely. It is not a realistic rendition of the photo but a new beginning. Working in this manner frees my creative spirit — I never know what the outcome may be and I’m always pleased at the outcome. I do not tie myself down using local colors for these barn designs because I want them to be whimsical and expressive.
