Grand Avenue, Des Moines
This painting was inspired by the geometric shapes of the downtown Des Moines buildings and completed as part of my Architecture series. I used my reference photos and worked from a pencil design drawn directly on the gessoed hardboard panel. The color scheme changed a couple times because the first palette of colors didn’t seem to “work” for me. The first color I chose for the sky was too dark, so I pulled out all my possible colors I had in stock and completely altered the palette, using warmer tones, and limited the colors to be more harmonious from my first choices. My problem is usually choosing too many colors and that conflicts with the unity of the design. This painting captures the perspective and dynamic shapes of the city.
