Midwest Farm Fields
This painting was inspired by the endless field configurations I notice when driving around Iowa. Barn structures are like old friends sitting in the curving fields of crops. It is restful and calming to me and there is a sense of harmony. The square design format is a favorite and I return to it frequently because a horizontal image is normally expected with landscapes and I like to shake it up a bit. Using a reference photo and a sketch, I cut the shapes from my hand-painted acrylic papers and glue them — much like a puzzle is constructed. The design is edited as I work and a protective varnish is added when the painting is finished.
