Faith Ringgold
This is a new portrait collage that is part of a series for an exhibit I’m working on for next year. The title of the exhibit will be “Black Women of Distinction”. I began with one of my favorite artists, Faith Ringgold, because her quilts and paintings are similar to the artwork I am creating in acrylic collage. I sketched the portrait features first and her colorful sweater and turban. Tracing paper helps me create the shapes and connect them using my pencil drawing — an additive process. Sometimes I can add or remove papers if I feel the color is not appropriate. I feel this portrait was successful as it captures and likeness of the artist and her character.
